Sessa Takuma O'sensei aikido Pasqualetti Commission

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy and religious beliefs. Ueshiba’s goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attackers from injury. Aikido is often translated as “the way of unifying (with) life energy” or as “the way of harmonious spirit”.

In Aikido we don’t have enemies and we don’t fight. Instead we have shared practice with our partners, and we mutually create beautiful movements through connection, understanding and leading each other’s energy. If Aikido is practiced the right way it can have a very strong positive impact on the daily life.

General information

Classes:

Tuesday and Thursday 8.00-9.00 – Rolling and Flexibility (ukemi class)

Friday 12.00-13.00 – Basic Forms

Wednesday 18.00-19.00 – Aikido principles (advanced class)

Location of classes: rue Van Maerlant 2, 1000 Brussels (VM.2) building.

Dojo members may benefit from the instructional videos, seminar information and motivational quotes regularly shared on our closed facebook page. You will get access to useful materials (e.g. Dojo etiquette and a full e-book on how to take care of your knees during Aikido practice, and many more reading material).

Each class starts and finishes with sitting meditation (zazen) in order to learn how to relax the body and calm the mind. The warming-up routine comprises a set of Japanese yoga exercise (Makko-ho) to increase the flexibility of the body and fill it up with life-power (ki) through the stretching of the main meridian lines.

Equipment: If you are a beginner, we recommend you not to make a big investment in fancy kimonos and expensive weapons straight at the outset. Instead, a regular Judo or Karate Gi (kimono), which you can easily purchase at any department store around Brussels, will most probably fit your needs. You will also need a pair of slippers (zori) to make it from the changing room to the Dojo.

Fees:

Yearly fee: 120 Euro, valid for one year

Officials working in the EU institutions are covered by JSIS insurance during the trainings.
